When working with a fabric-based wall covering, it is important to start out with properly measured space. Use tape to measure the height and width of the area to be covered and jot the measurements down for reference. Once you have the dimensions, bring swatches of assorted backed fabrics home and tape them up on the wall to see which ones work best in your space. When you are ready to order, keep in mind that fabrics with large repeats require more yards and are more expensive than smaller patterns.
When you’ve selected your fabric, cut it roughly to size. You’ll be trimming precise edges later so leave about 2 inches of extra fabric at the top and bottom as well as along window edges. The fabric should then be prewashed to remove any excess starch.
